LAS VEGAS — Malcolm Subban made 22 saves for the Vegas Golden Knights, taking over for Marc-Andre Fleury in a 4-1 win against the Vancouver Canucks at T-Mobile Arena on Tuesday.

Fleury made seven saves in the first period but did not start the second because of an undisclosed injury. He was hit in the mask by a Brandon Sutter shot 10 minutes into the first.

Vegas (47-21-5) leads the San Jose Sharks by eight points for first place in the Pacific Division.

Golden Knights coach Gerard Gallant did not have an update on Fleury.

“Not really, no. I haven’t heard anything yet,” he said. “Trainers told me he’s not coming back tonight.”

Gallant confirmed the move to bring in Subban was not to give Fleury rest. Fleury has started 21 of the past 22 games.

Subban played his first game since Feb. 2.

“I was just trying to think of making every save,” Subban said. “The guys made it pretty easy for me. A lot of shots were from the outside. It definitely made it easy for me.”

Fleury gets the win, his 402nd in the NHL, which moves him past Chris Osgood and into 12th place on the all-time list.

Jonathan Marchessault, Cody Eakin, Pierre-Edouard Bellemare and Tomas Tatar scored for the Golden Knights, who won for the sixth time in nine games (6-3-0).

“As soon as we realized Subban was going in we were talking to each other in the locker room saying, ‘Let’s make sure to be strong for him,’” Bellemare said. “He hasn’t played in a while and he needed us to play a strong defensive game. I think we managed pretty well.”

Sutter scored for Vancouver (25-39-9), which lost for the seventh straight time (0-7-0), its longest streak since losing eight in a row from March 26-April 9, 2017. Jacob Markstrom made 24 saves in his fifth straight loss.

“I didn’t think we had the start we needed to to play against a good team,” Sutter said. “Teams like that that are fighting for playoff positioning, they’re playing well right now, and we’ve got to match it.”

Marchessault ended an 11-game goalless drought at 3:56 of the first period to give the Golden Knights a 1-0 lead. Eakin scored 57 seconds later to make it 2-0.

“I had good chances the past couple of games, and that’s just the way it went,” Marchessault said. “You just have to stick with it. Slumps are going to happen throughout the season, and it was good to get one past the goalie.”

Bellemare scored his first goal since Jan. 21 with 33 seconds remaining for a 3-0 lead.

Tatar made it 4-0 at 14:21 of the second period.

Sutter scored at 8:27 of the third period to cut the lead to 4-1.

“It was a good game, basically,” Bellemare said. “There was a lot of goals that were made because of good plays, not just because of lucky bounces. I think a lot of them were flowing in the system and it was fun.”
